SkinTalks - August 14, 2026
Glowies, it's time to talk toner. A good face toner can quietly transform your skin by rebalancing it, delivering an instant layer of hydration, and prepping your face so every cream that follows actually sinks in and works. It's often the secret ingredient behind that lit-from-within glow.
But with hydrating toners, exfoliating toners, and toner pads all fighting for a spot on your shelf, it can be hard to know where to start or which formula your skin actually needs.
In this SkinTalks post, we're breaking it all down so you can understand what face toners actually do, how and when to use one, and which best suits your skin type. We'll also share our favorite Korean toners, which are famous for their gentle formulas that deliver real results.
Skin toners are lightweight, liquid skincare products designed to be applied right after you wash your face. Think of them as the bridge between cleansing and the rest of your routine.
Cleansing removes dirt, oil, sunscreen, and makeup but can also leave your skin slightly out of balance. Water and some cleansers sit at a different pH to your skin, and that post-cleanse tightness you sometimes feel is your skin telling you it's been left a little stripped.
A toner steps in straight after cleansing to rebalance your skin's pH, deliver an instant layer of lightweight hydration, and sweep away any last traces of residue your cleanser left behind. They then deliver targeted benefits depending on the formula you choose, from hydration to exfoliation (more on this in the next section!)
Toner also helps the rest of your products do their best work. Skin that's damp and prepped absorbs far better than skin that's dry and tight, so applying your toner first means your serums, moisturizer, and treatments can sink in and work harder.
The toner aisle is big, Glowies, so let's take a quick tour.
Most toners you'll meet are hydrating toners, especially within Korean skincare. These watery or slightly milky formulas top up your skin's moisture, keep your barrier happy, and are gentle enough to use morning and night. Close cousins are soothing toners, which do all of the above with an extra dose of calming ingredients like heartleaf or centella to support sensitive or stressed-out skin.
If your skin needs more of a refresh than a drink, that's where exfoliating toners come in. These use low levels of gentle acids to lift away dead skin cells with every swipe, smoothing texture, clearing congestion, and brightening dullness.
The acid on the label tells you where it works: AHAs like glycolic acid smooth and brighten the surface, BHAs like salicylic acid head deeper into pores, and PHAs keep things extra gentle for sensitive types. Exfoliating toners are stronger than hydrating toners, so save them for a few evenings a week rather than using them every day.
Youโll also spot different types of toners. Classic liquid toners are pressed in with your palms or swept on with a cotton pad, while toner pads come pre-soaked making them mess-free and travel-friendly.
The right toner for you comes down to your skin type, and Korean skincare has every concern covered. These are our most-loved picks, but you can find even more in our full guide to the best Korean toners.
Toner for sensitive skin
This toner has earned its cult status. Made with 77% heartleaf extract, a K-beauty hero ingredient famous for calming redness and irritation, it soothes stressed, reactive skin while rebalancing its pH. The watery texture sinks in instantly with zero sticky feeling, making it a brilliant everyday choice for sensitive skin.
Toner for dry skin
If youโve got dry skin, meet your new best friend. This one is made with 77.78% rice extract, giving it a milky texture that delivers deep, lasting moisture while visibly brightening dull, tired skin.
Want to avoid alcohol and fragrance? Another beautiful option for dry skin, which pairs fermented black rice extract with hyaluronic acid to plump the skin with moisture and support a healthy skin barrier.
Toner for oily skin
If enlarged pores and excess sebum are your main concern, reach these. These dual-textured toner pads use AHA and BHA to sweep away dead skin cells and dissolve the oil and buildup that stretch pores out, leaving skin looking smoother and more refined with every use. Best toner for acne-prone skin
Looking for a toner for acne-prone skin? This product is a K-beauty legend for a reason. It combines all three types of chemical exfoliant with soothing tea tree water to clear congestion, calm active breakouts, and smooth post-blemish texture, all in one gentle daily formula. Consistency is key here, and plenty of devotees report visibly clearer skin within a month.
Best toner for combination skin
Combination skin needs balance, and this toner delivers exactly that. With low, skin-friendly levels of AHA and BHA, it gently refines texture and keeps oilier zones clear without stripping drier areas, making it mild enough for regular use. It's the perfect first step into exfoliating toners.
Best toner for dull skin
Combination skin needs balance, and this toner delivers exactly that. With low, skin-friendly levels of AHA and BHA, it gently refines texture and keeps oilier zones clear without stripping drier areas, making it mild enough for regular use. It's the perfect first step into exfoliating toners.
Toner is one of the easiest steps in your routine to get right. It just starts with freshly cleansed skin. Toner should be the very first thing that touches your face after washing, ideally while it's still slightly damp, because that lingering moisture helps everything absorb better.
From there, you've got two ways to apply. The K-beauty favorite is to dispense a few drops into clean palms and gently press the toner into your skin, working from the center of your face outwards. It wastes far less product than a cotton pad and doubles as a mini massage. The cotton pad method still has its place, but save it for exfoliating toners, where the gentle sweep helps lift away dead skin cells as you go.
If your skin is feeling extra thirsty, don't stop at one layer. Pressing in two or three thin layers of a hydrating toner, letting each absorb before the next, builds deeper hydration than one big splash ever could. K-beauty lovers know this as the 7 skin method in its most dedicated form, and while seven layers is definitely optional, even two make a noticeable difference on dry days. Whatever you do, resist the urge to pile on more product in one go: two or three drops pressed in properly will always outperform a palmful splashed on in a hurry.
Once your toner is on, don't wait around. Move straight to your serum or moisturizer while your skin is still damp, so the next layer can lock all that hydration in. Toner left to air-dry on its own can actually leave skin feeling drier.
A few extra things to keep in mind:
How do you know if your toner is working? Give it two to four weeks of consistent use, then check in with your skin. With a hydrating toner, you're looking for softer, plumper skin, less post-cleanse tightness, and makeup or skincare that applies more smoothly. With an exfoliating toner, expect smoother texture and fewer clogged pores over time.

Toner goes on right after cleansing and before everything else, morning and night. Think: cleanse, tone, then serums, moisturizer, and SPF to finish in the morning. Most hydrating toners are gentle enough for twice-daily use, refreshing your skin in the morning and rebalancing it after your evening double cleanse. The one exception is exfoliating toners, which are best kept to a few evenings a week.
Yes, absolutely! Decanting a watery toner into a clean spray bottle turns it into a refreshing facial mist you can spritz after cleansing, over makeup, or whenever your skin needs a midday pick-me-up. Just make sure the bottle is properly cleaned and dried first, and stick to water-light formulas, as milky or viscous toners can clog the nozzle. It's best to keep exfoliating toners out of spray bottles too, so the acids don't end up in your eyes.
Essences and toners are similar and the line sometimes gets blurry. Generally, a toner is the lighter, more watery step that comes straight after cleansing to rebalance and prep the skin, while an essence is slightly more concentrated and focuses on delivering active ingredients. If you use both, toner comes first. If you only want one, a good hydrating toner covers most of the same ground.
No, you shouldnโt wash off toner. Itโs a leave-on product, and rinsing it away would undo all its good work. Apply it, let it absorb for a few seconds, and move straight on to the next step of your routine.
